Few museums ask visitors to slow down. The Frick Collection does.

Housed within the former Fifth Avenue residence of industrialist Henry Clay Frick, the museum offers an experience unlike that of a traditional institution. Rather than moving through monumental galleries, visitors wander from room to room as though they have been invited into a private home, where masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Bellini, Fragonard, Turner, and Goya exist within the quiet rhythm of domestic architecture. Founded as a public museum in 1935, the Frick continues to preserve this intimate encounter between art, architecture, and everyday life.

At the heart of the museum lies the Garden Court, where natural light filters through a soaring skylight above a marble fountain surrounded by seasonal plantings. It is here that the pace of New York seems to dissolve, replaced by an atmosphere of stillness rarely found in one of the world's busiest cities.

Following its comprehensive renovation and enhancement project, the museum reopened its historic Fifth Avenue home in April 2025. The restoration carefully preserved the character of the original mansion while introducing new galleries, expanded visitor spaces, and public access to portions of the Frick family's former private residence for the first time.

What distinguishes The Frick Collection is not simply the quality of its masterpieces but the intimacy with which they are experienced. Here, paintings are never isolated from their surroundings. Architecture, furniture, sculpture, decorative arts, and landscape exist together as a single composition, reminding visitors that great collecting was once inseparable from the idea of home.
